The SUNY Potsdam Department of English and Communications honored eight students as its 2022 Departmental Scholars.

The Canfield Scholarships are awarded by academic departments at SUNY Potsdam to recognize students with demonstrated academic excellence and potential.

This award is presented annually to the student who demonstrates the greatest achievement and promise in creative writing.

The SUNY Potsdam Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences honored a student as its 2022 Departmental Scholar.

Dr. Alice Williams taught science at SUNY Potsdam for 38 years and retired in 1965. Her extensive rock and mineral collection makes up a significant portion of the College's collection. This award is presented to a student who performs outstanding service to the department.

Jessie J. McNall, who was Professor Emerita of Science, served as Science Department Chair at SUNY Potsdam for many years prior to her retirement in 1946. She established an endowed fund with the Potsdam College Foundation in order that awards be made to sophomores for excellence in science, especially if preparing for teaching.

The SUNY Potsdam Department of Computer Science honored two students as its 2022 Departmental Scholars.

The Stillman Memorial Award was established in 1973 in memory of Professor Alan H. Stillman, Director of the Computer Center and Chair of the SUNY Potsdam Department of Computer Science from 1967 to 1973. Professor Stillman was instrumental in establishing the highly regarded academic program in Computer and Information Sciences at SUNY Potsdam.

The Scholarship for Excellence in the Study of Advanced Computer Science is awarded to computer science majors in their second or third year at SUNY Potsdam who have a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Preference is given to students who have expressed an interest in graduate school and who are considered capable of succeeding in further study by the computer science faculty.

This Alumni Scholarship was started by a donation from former faculty members Tim Fossum and Susan Haller. Funds are used to assist computer science students who have completed at least one semester at SUNY Potsdam in computer science and who have a GPA of 3.0 or higher.

Two SUNY Potsdam students were among a select group of students from across New York State to be honored with the 2022 Norman R. McConney Jr. Award for EOP Student Excellence. The award, which bears the name of the late Norman McConney, one of the architects of the statewide Educational Opportunity Program and a champion of youth empowerment, celebrates EOP students who have overcome significant obstacles in life to achieve their educational and personal goals.

The SUNY Potsdam Department of Mathematics honored two students as its 2022 Mathematics Departmental Scholars. To achieve the honor, a student must earn a mathematics average of 3.50 or better, and a college GPA of 3.50 or better.

The Clarence F. Stephens Mathematics Scholar Award is given to the non-graduating mathematics major who, by his or her achievement in mathematics, best personifies C. F. Stephens' vision of the mathematics student who is becoming all he or she is capable of being. The award is a check from the C. L. Smith Mathematics Scholarship Fund and SUNY Potsdam Foundation. In addition, the recipient is designated a Clarence F. Stephens Mathematics Scholar and his or her name is inscribed on a plaque displayed in Carson Hall. The recipients of the C. F. Stephens Mathematics Scholar Award are chosen by the mathematics faculty.

The Scholarship for Excellence in the Study of Advanced Mathematics is awarded annually to recipients who excel academically in mathematics and have demonstrated an interest in attending graduate school in mathematics post-graduation. Recipients must have sophomore or junior status at the time of selection and will receive the scholarship in their junior or senior year. This scholarship, established in 2016 by an anonymous donor, was created to encourage those students who show promise and interest in attending graduate school in mathematics.

The Pi Mu Epsilon Senior Award is given by the Pi Mu Epsilon National Mathematics Honor Society chapter at SUNY Potsdam to a graduating senior, in recognition of outstanding achievement in mathematics and for the promotion of scholarly activity in mathematics.

The Mathematics Alumni Award for Excellence in Mathematics was established by the alumni of the SUNY Potsdam Department of Mathematics, and is given to at least one graduating mathematics major chosen by the faculty. Each recipient has his/her name inscribed on a plaque that is on permanent display in the department. Additionally, a monetary award is given for excellence in mathematics to at least one outstanding senior, junior and sophomore mathematics major.

The Susan Dewitt Kaiser Award is given to the graduating mathematics major who has the highest academic average on record prior to the May graduation, who will also graduate with teacher certification, and who has also completed all academic years at SUNY Potsdam. The award was established in 1986 by the family and friends of the late Susan DeWitt Kaiser, mathematics teacher, Class of 1967.

The Vasily Cateforis Scholarship fund was established in 2004, and the first award was presented in the Fall of 2007. The award is given annually, by the SUNY Potsdam Department of Mathematics, to non-graduating mathematics majors, who are fully admitted into the BA/MA program. Both merit and financial need are considered. The ultimate, long-term goal is to reach an endowment of $100,000 to provide multiple scholarships. The recipients of the Vasily Cateforis Award are chosen by the mathematics faculty.

The SUNY Potsdam Department of Chemistry recently selected two outstanding students as the 2022 Departmental Scholars.

This award is given to a senior chemistry student who has demonstrated scholarship, research achievements and potential for further professional growth.

The American Chemical Society Award is given by the Northern New York Section to a chemistry/biochemistry major who has distinguished themselves through outstanding achievement in chemistry or biochemistry.

The Alexander G. Major Award was established in memory of Dr. Major, who served on the faculty of SUNY Potsdam from 1947 to 1973. He was a professor in the Science Department and taught biochemistry. Dr. Major was instrumental in developing the first programs in chemistry and biochemistry. The Major award is given to a student who has demonstrated significant competence in the field of chemistry, biology or biochemistry.

Fifteen SUNY Potsdam students recently completed the Women, Gender and Leadership specialty badge through the College's Summit Leadership Program.

The State University of New York at Potsdam will recognize the Class of 2022 during the College's 202nd Commencement Ceremony on Saturday, May 21.

The Art Museum at SUNY Potsdam is showcasing works by two graduating seniors in the College's selective BFA program in visual arts. The annual Bachelor of Fine Arts Exhibition is on display in the Gibson Gallery through Commencement.

Two outstanding SUNY Potsdam graduates have been recognized as the academic honorees for the Class of 2022. The award recipients are chosen by Faculty Senate and are specially recognized during Commencement.

Thanks to a grant from the SUNY Early Childhood Paid Internship Program, two SUNY Potsdam students are wrapping up an unforgettable internship experience at the College's Childcare Center.
