The State University of New York at Potsdam will recognize the Class of 2023 during the College's 203rd Commencement Ceremony on Saturday, May 20.

28 SUNY Potsdam students recently earned the Writing Your Way In badge, after completing special training through the College's Summit Leadership Program.

One SUNY Potsdam student recently completed the Career Management: Exploration and Development specialty badge through the College's Summit Leadership Program.

Two outstanding SUNY Potsdam graduates have been recognized as the academic honorees for the Class of 2023. The award recipients are chosen by Faculty Senate and are specially recognized during Commencement.

The award is given to an outstanding graduating senior pre-law student in the SUNY Potsdam Department of Politics.

This award was created by the SUNY Potsdam Department of Politics to honor former chair and faculty member, Dr. David E. Brown, who co-created, along with Dr. Richard Del Guidice, Potsdam's political science program and helped to establish the Department of Political Science in 1971. It is presented to a student who has submitted an outstanding paper for senior seminar.

The Noreen M. Canfield Scholarship is awarded each spring to an outstanding junior or first-semester senior politics major at SUNY Potsdam. The selection of the Canfield Scholar is based on achievement, demonstrated ability and potential for further professional growth.

The Richard Del Guidice Scholarship is an award created by alumni and friends of the Politics Department on the occasion of Professor Del Guidice's retirement in 2002. The endowment provides an annual scholarship to a junior pre-law student to assist in paying the costs associated with taking the Law School Admission Test and applying to various law schools.

This scholarship is awarded to the outstanding junior history major based on the student's overall GPA, their GPA in history, and the department's knowledge of the student. The scholarship was established by the wife of the former priest of Potsdam's Trinity Episcopal Church and mayor of Potsdam.

This award goes to a freshman or sophomore student who has demonstrated outstanding performance in an American history survey course during the preceding calendar year. It was established in honor of Dr. Robert L. Briggs, a valued member of the history faculty from 1961 to his retirement in 1985.

This scholarship is awarded to a student, preferably from St. Lawrence County, who is majoring in history and who can be expected to achieve an average of 3.25 in history courses and 3.0 GPA overall. SUNY Potsdam student Annabelle Kahle has been honored for her outstanding undergraduate work by being recognized with two academic awards.

This award is for outstanding performance by a freshman or sophomore in a world history course during the preceding calendar year. The award honors Dr. John F. Schwaller, a colonial Latin American historian, who served as the college President from 2006 to 2013.

The Ilse J. Shaw History Award goes to the senior history major with the best scholarship and highest cumulative GPA in history courses during his or her undergraduate career.

The SUNY Potsdam Department of History recently selected two outstanding students as the 2023 Departmental Scholars.

This is an award to recognize an outstanding paper submitted in a departmental seminar, and it commemorates the former chair of the Social Studies Department, who served from 1941 to 1964.

This award is named for Dr. Philip T. Neisser '79, who served as member of the Department of Politics at SUNY Potsdam for many years as an instructor, department chair, assistant dean, and most recently as the College's officer-in-charge. It is presented to a politics or international studies major, who, through their efforts in any combination of student clubs, co-curricular events or other service activities associated with the Department of Politics, contributes to upholding Dr. Neisser's vision of the department as a place of inclusion, excellence and open dialogue.

Candidates for this award will be, in most cases, a SUNY Potsdam sophomore or junior politics or international studies major, who have maintained an overall GPA at the Dean's List level (3.25) or higher. The award is renewable for three years (until graduation), contingent upon the maintenance of a GPA above 3.25.

The Research Corporation for Science Advancement has announced that SUNY Potsdam Professor of Chemistry Dr. Fadi Bou-Abdallah is the recipient of a 2023 Cottrell Postbac Award, one of seven awarded nationally. The $50,000 award is given to Cottrell Scholars to strengthen their research programs, by supporting the work of an undergraduate senior working under their supervision for a year after graduation. Maximilian Beyer '23, a graduating chemistry major from Scarsdale, N.Y., will conduct postbaccalaureate research with Bou-Abdallah thanks to the award.
