SUNY Potsdam

This award was created by the Department of Politics to honor former Chair and Faculty member, Dr. David E. Brown, who co-created, along with Dr. Richard Del Guidice, Potsdam's Political Science program and helped to establish the Department of Political Science in 1971. It is presented to a student who has submitted an outstanding paper for Senior Seminar.

This scholarship is awarded each year to a SUNY Potsdam sophomore or junior political science major who maintains a GPA at the Dean's List level or higher.

The Noreen M. Canfield Scholarship is awarded each spring to an outstanding junior or first-semester senior politics major at SUNY Potsdam. The selection of the Canfield Scholar is based on achievement, demonstrated ability and potential for further professional growth.

SUNY Potsdam student Michael Carlisle has been honored for his outstanding undergraduate work by being recognized with an academic award and a scholarship.

Allen J. Danks was a 1978 graduate of SUNY Potsdam with a major in Political Science. He was awarded a Lehman Scholarship and went on to do his graduate work at Columbia University. He is remembered as a man of great intellect who believed in making a positive and heartfelt contribution to the world around him and who gave of himself for the benefit of others. At his death in 1991 at the age of 35, his classmates at Potsdam endowed this award in his honor to help an undergraduate at the College who is active in social, community and/or political issues.

This award goes to a freshman or sophomore student who has demonstrated outstanding performance in an American history survey course during the preceding calendar year. It was established in honor of Dr. Robert L. Briggs, a valued member of the history faculty from 1961 to his retirement in 1985.

This scholarship is awarded to a student, preferably from St. Lawrence County, who is majoring in history and who can be expected to achieve an average of 3.25 in history courses and 3.0 GPA overall. This scholarship is awarded to the outstanding junior history major based on the student's overall GPA, their GPA in history, and the department's knowledge of the student. The scholarship was established by the wife of the former priest of Potsdam's Trinity Episcopal Church and mayor of Potsdam.

This award is for an outstanding performance by a student in public history. The award commemorates Dr. M. J. Heisey, a longtime member and former Chair of the Department of History, who dedicated her career to researching and teaching public history and oral history. She retired in 2019.

Nine SUNY Potsdam students were recently inducted into Phi Alpha Theta, the national historical honor society.

The SUNY Potsdam Department of History recently selected five outstanding students as the 2021 Departmental Scholars.

Windila Balbone has been recognized with three academic awards in honor of her outstanding achievements at SUNY Potsdam, including the International Studies Departmental Scholar Award, the International Studies Award, and the Dr. Philip Neisser Departmental Service Award.

This is an award to recognize an outstanding seminar paper written in HIST 480, and it commemorates the former chair of the Social Studies Department, who served from 1941 to 1964.

The Richard Del Guidice Scholarship is an award created by alumni and friends of the Politics Department on the occasion of Professor Del Guidice's retirement in 2002. The endowment provides an annual scholarship to a junior pre-law student to assist in paying the costs associated with taking the Law School Admission Test and applying to various law schools.

This scholarship is awarded to an outstanding sophomore politics major. The Rebecca R. Pratt Scholarship for Excellence in Politics was created by a friend of the Pratt family in memory of Rebecca Pratt, who was a 1997 politics graduate of SUNY Potsdam.

This award is for outstanding performance by a freshman or sophomore in a world history course during the preceding calendar year. The award honors Dr. John F. Schwaller, a colonial Latin American historian, who served as the college President from 2006 to 2013.

The Ilse J. Shaw History Award goes to the senior history major with the best scholarship and highest cumulative GPA in history courses during his or her undergraduate career.

The award is given to an outstanding graduating senior pre-law student in the SUNY Potsdam Department of Politics.
