Three SUNY Potsdam Army Reserve Officers Training Corps cadets were commissioned into the U.S. Army at the grade of Second Lieutenant on May 16, as part of the College's Commencement weekend.

The SUNY Potsdam chapter of Alpha Sigma Lambda, the international non-traditional student honor society, recently inducted 15 accomplished students into its ranks.

More than 200 SUNY Potsdam students completed one or more internship placements at companies, non-profits or campus departments in the Spring 2014 semester. SUNY Potsdam's internship program places students with employers whose interests align with their studies. Each student has a faculty sponsor, and earns between 1 and 12 credits toward their degree requirements for successfully completing the internship.

The Art Museum at SUNY Potsdam is showcasing works by 14 graduating seniors in the College's selective BFA program in visual arts. The annual Bachelor of Fine Arts Exhibition is on display in the Roland Gibson Gallery through May 18.

Abigail Spillane, a SUNY Potsdam graduate student who is studying toward her Master of Science in Teaching degree in childhood education, is the recipient of the 2014 Stephen K. Tompsett Memorial Scholarship. The Stephen K. Tompsett Memorial Fund for Technology in Education ("Stephen's Fund") was created in honor and memory of Stephen Kevin Tompsett, who was killed in the attacks on the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001.

SUNY Potsdam's Crane School of Music will present a concert featuring the Crane Symphony Orchestra on Thursday, April 10 at 7:30 p.m. in the Helen M. Hosmer Concert Hall. The performance will include "Viola Concerto" by Cecil Forsyth, featuring Timothy MacDuff of Hudson Falls, NY, who is a winner of the 2013 Crane Concerto Competition.Summary

The Crane Opera Ensemble will present a pair of "angelic" one-act operas this spring, with performances on Friday and Saturday, April 11 and 12 at 7:30 p.m. in the Sara M. Snell Music Theater at SUNY Potsdam's Crane School of Music. The award-winning Crane Opera Ensemble will perform the tragic yet lyric "Suor Angelica," with music by Giacomo Puccini, followed by the satirical and off-beat "Angelique" by Jacques Ibert.

SUNY Potsdam's Department of Theatre and Dance is set to debut the premiere production in the Proscenium Theater at the College's new Performing Arts Center. William Shakespeare's comedy "Twelfth Night" will feature a cast of talented students. The show will open April 3 and close April 13.

The following local residents were among 23 SUNY Potsdam student-athletes to earn a spot on the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Commissioner's List for the Fall 2013 semester, the conference announced last week. Players named to the Commissioner's List have a minimum 3.3 GPA based on three semesters at Potsdam.

SUNY Potsdam's Crane School of Music will present the Student Honors Recital, featuring some of the best student performers at Crane, on Tuesday, Feb. 4 at 7:30 p.m. in the Sara M. Snell Music Theater. This event is free, and the public is invited to attend. The concert will feature seven students selected by professors to represent their respective performance areas.

The State University of New York at Potsdam recently awarded baccalaureate and master's degrees to 158 students. The SUNY Potsdam graduates were awarded their degrees in December 2013.

The State University of New York at Potsdam recently named 851 students to the President's List, in recognition of their academic excellence in the Fall 2013 semester. The SUNY Potsdam students were honored for earning top marks by Interim President Dr. Dennis L. Hefner.

SUNY Potsdam student interns will travel to the 2014 National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) Show in Anaheim, Calif., this month. Joined by faculty from The Crane School of Music, the students will work directly with leading music industry firms, through a unique internship program organized by the Crane Institute for Music Business and Entrepreneurship -- the only ongoing program of its kind in the country.

The Department of Theatre and Dance at SUNY Potsdam will present performances of original dance works by student choreographers from Dec. 6 to Dec. 8 on campus. Fourteen SUNY Potsdam students who are majoring or minoring in dance have created 20 dance works for the concert, which is entitled "Kaleidoscopic."

The State University of New York at Potsdam recently named 412 students who excelled academically in the Fall 2013 semester to the Dean's List.

SUNY Potsdam has announced the student cast and crew for the Tony-winning musical "Ragtime," showing at the College from Nov. 14 to 17. A collaboration between faculty, staff and students from both The Crane School of Music and the Department of Theatre and Dance, the show features the award-winning Crane Opera Ensemble and Orchestra. Matthew Zydel, a senior at SUNY Potsdam's Crane School of Music, recently took part in a Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra masterclass led by clarinetist Ricardo Morales on Oct. 16. Zydel was one of three college students who were chosen via audition to perform for and learn from Morales, who is the principal clarinet for the Philadelphia Orchestra.

The cast and crew for the upcoming production of Martin Sherman's play "Bent," presented by the SUNY Potsdam Department of Theatre and Dance, has been announced. The all-student cast and crew is being advised by experienced faculty, and will present an untold story of the Nazi persecution of homosexuals during World War II. "Bent" will run from Oct. 24 to Oct. 27 in the Black Box Theater, located in the College's Satterlee Hall.

The SUNY Potsdam Epsilon Upsilon chapter of Kappa Delta Pi, the international honor society for education, recently inducted new members. The 32 inductees included both undergraduates and graduate students studying education.

The State University of New York at Potsdam has awarded scholarships, grants and awards to 1,047 students for the 2013-14 academic year. These accomplished SUNY Potsdam undergraduate and graduate students were recognized for their achievements with support for their educational experience.

SUNY Potsdam's Teacher Opportunity Corps program honored students who excelled in the 2012-13 academic year at its annual reception and ceremony. Latesha Fussell of Brooklyn, N.Y., was presented the 2013 TOC Student of the Year Award.
