SUNY Potsdam Students Complete Mental Health First Aid Training

Several SUNY Potsdam students recently earned Mental Health First Aid badges for completing special training through the College's Summit Leadership Program. Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) prepares individuals to assist others experiencing a mental health or substance use-related crisis. Individuals trained in MHFA are prepared to: 1) Recognize the potential risk factors and warning signs for a range of mental health problems. 2) Use a 5-step action plan to help an individual in crisis connect with appropriate professional help. 3) Interpret the prevalence of various mental health disorders in the U.S. and the need for reduced negative attitudes in their communities. 4) Apply knowledge of the appropriate professional, peer, social, and self-help resources available to help someone with a mental health problem to treat and manage the problem and achieve recovery.

Crane Symphony Orchestra Performs at NYSSMA Conference

The Crane Symphony Orchestra from SUNY Potsdam's Crane School of Music has been invited to perform at the New York State School Music Association Winter Conference in Rochester, N.Y. Eighty students will present Edward Elgar's "Enigma Variations" on Thursday, Dec. 4, in the opening concert.

Crane School of Music Students to Premiere Three New Operatic Works

Students at SUNY Potsdam's Crane School of Music will premiere the three winning operatic works of the Domenic J. Pellicciotti Opera Composition Prize next week. The student cast and crew will be able to meet the composers and librettists of the three winning works, "A Letter to East 11th Street," "In a Mirror, Darkly," and "The Fox and the Pomegranate." Performances are from Nov. 13 to Nov. 15 at 7:30 p.m. at The Crane School of Music.

Crane School of Music Students Perform for Guitar Symposium in NYC

Two Crane School of Music students were invited to perform at the Guitar Foundation of America Regional Symposium in New York City on Oct. 25. SUNY Potsdam's Crane School of Music was one of only four music schools from New York State to be invited to perform at the College Guitar Ensemble Showcase at the symposium, which was hosted by the New York City Classical Guitar Society.

Two accomplished SUNY Potsdam undergraduates recently presented their research at the Legislative Office Building in Albany, in an event attended by legislators and SUNY officials. Students from 47 SUNY and CUNY campuses presented more than 100 poster displays highlighting their research in a range of academic disciplines. Crane Opera Ensemble Announces Cast and Crew for Upcoming 'Angelic' Productions

The Crane Opera Ensemble will present a pair of "angelic" one-act operas this spring, with performances on Friday and Saturday, April 11 and 12 at 7:30 p.m. in the Sara M. Snell Music Theater at SUNY Potsdam's Crane School of Music. The award-winning Crane Opera Ensemble will perform the tragic yet lyric "Suor Angelica," with music by Giacomo Puccini, followed by the satirical and off-beat "Angelique" by Jacques Ibert.

Crane School of Music Students to be Featured in Honors Recital

SUNY Potsdam's Crane School of Music will present the Student Honors Recital, featuring some of the best student performers at Crane, on Tuesday, Feb. 4 at 7:30 p.m. in the Sara M. Snell Music Theater. This event is free, and the public is invited to attend. The concert will feature seven students selected by professors to represent their respective performance areas.

Crane School of Music Student Plays in Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra Masterclass

Matthew Zydel, a senior at SUNY Potsdam's Crane School of Music, recently took part in a Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra masterclass led by clarinetist Ricardo Morales on Oct. 16. Zydel was one of three college students who were chosen via audition to perform for and learn from Morales, who is the principal clarinet for the Philadelphia Orchestra.

Original Works by Area Crane School of Music Students to be Featured in Concert

Five Crane School of Music students will present original works in a Student Composer Concert at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 15 in the Helen M. Hosmer Concert Hall on the SUNY Potsdam campus.
