SUNY Potsdam Announces Line-Up of Speakers for Disciplined Inquiry in Education Seminar Series

Jenica Rogers to Speak about Student Privacy Rights to Kick Off 2018-19 Disciplined Inquiry in Education Seminar Series at SUNY Potsdam

Potsdam, NY (08/24/2018) — Jenica Rogers, the director of College Libraries and the Dorf Endowed Director for Applied Learning at SUNY Potsdam, will open the 2018-19 Disciplined Inquiry in Education Seminar Series with a presentation at noon on Wednesday, Sept. 5.

Rogers' presentation, "Student Privacy Rights: Ethically Supporting Student Success," will focus on a recent survey that she and her staff conducted with students about their understanding of, and attitudes toward, privacy rights. Educational institutions can track data to help improve student performance, such as through advising software, and the group wanted to examine the ethical implications of this.

Rogers and her fellow librarians, Lauren Jackson-Beck, Jessica Ramey and Esta Tovstiadi, completed a student survey looking at the understanding SUNY Potsdam students have concerning their privacy rights in general, and regarding the college library in particular. They also asked students about their level of comfort in having universities and libraries use their data in different situations.

The Disciplined Inquiry in Education Seminar is sponsored by SUNY Potsdam's School of Education and Professional Studies. Since its inception 11 years ago, the School has hosted more than 110 presentations as part of the annual seminar.

All seminar meetings will be offered on Wednesdays, in the Rebecca V. Sheard Literacy Center, from noon to 1 p.m. These events are free, and the public is welcome to attend.

The remaining sessions for the Fall 2018 Disciplined Inquiry in Education Seminar Series are as follows:

  • Sept. 19: Abere A. Kassa: "The Effects of Intrateam and Interteam Trust on Organizational Outcomes: A Multilevel Study"
  • Oct. 3: Lisa M. Wilson: "Teaching Scholarly Editing Through Coding: Digital Mitford"
