SUNY Potsdam Welcomes Back Alumna Dr. Maya Stone '01 for a Special Performance at The Crane School of Music

Dr. Maya Stone and Dr. Yoojung Kim will Appear in Concert at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 25 in Sara M. Snell Music Theater

Potsdam, NY (02/19/2019) — The Crane School of Music is thrilled to welcome back Alumna Dr. Maya Stone '01 for a special bassoon concert on Monday, Feb. 25 at 7:30 p.m. in Sara M. Snell Music Theater. Stone will be accompanied by Dr. Yoojung Kim on piano.

Stone will present the premiere of Gregory Wanamaker's new piece, "Echoes of Melancholy," written in 2017 in memory of Ladislav Kubik. She will also perform Johann Sebastian Bach's "Cello Suite No. 2 in D Minor, BWV 1008."

Both concerts are free, and the public is invited to attend.

About the Artist:

Dr. Maya Stone '01 is a champion of music. She has commissioned and premiered several works by American composers. Recent projects include solo bassoon in Black Gospel Music, which includes collaborating with the composers Raymond Wise, Mark Lomax and William Menefield.

Stone gives recitals and master classes around the U.S. regularly. She has been a member of the Sphinx Orchestra since 2008, and won the second bassoon position with the Huntsville Symphony in 2007. She has played at the International Double Reed Society Conference, and performs regularly with orchestras around the Southeast. She is also a member of the Rushes Ensemble, which performs Michael Gordon's piece of the same name; and Chatterbird, an alternative new music group that is unique to the Nashville, Tenn. region.

Stone maintains an active teaching schedule in both the academic and private setting. She held full-time professorships at universities in Tennessee, Ohio and Missouri from 2004 to 2013. This semester she is working as an adjunct professor at the University of Alabama in Huntsville. She also teaches a private studio of woodwind students in Nashville and Huntsville.

In addition to teaching and freelancing, Maya enjoys serving on the Regional Orchestra Players Association (ROPA) Executive Board as a Member At Large. She has served as the ROPA Delegate for the Huntsville Symphony Orchestra Players Association, and currently serves as the Alternate Delegate.

Stone received her D.M.A. in bassoon performance from the University of Texas at Austin in 2010, an M.M. in bassoon performance and woodwind specialty from Michigan State University in 2003, and a B.M. in music education from SUNY Potsdam in 2001. Her teachers include Kristin Wolfe Jensen, Barrick Stees, and Frank Wangler.
