SUNY Potsdam Welcomes Art Teachers from Across Region

SUNY Potsdam Hosts North Country Art Teachers Association for Skill-Based Workshops and Professional Development

Potsdam, NY (03/13/2024) — SUNY Potsdam is proud to welcome visiting art teachers and student teachers working in the field of art education for the upcoming North Country Art Teachers Association (NCATA) Staff Day on Friday, March 15.

The event is open to all art educators in the St. Lawrence-Lewis BOCES region. The campus will host roundtable discussions, skill-based workshops and professional development activities in partnership with the NCATA, the College's Department of Art and the St. Lawrence County Arts Council.

Discussions will focus on current practice in art education, ways that the curriculum can be vertically aligned for curriculum development and an exploration of the NCATA Scholars partnership with SLC Arts.

Skill-based workshops in digital drawing, printmaking, photography, drawing and graphic design will round out the day, along with a tour of the Gibson Gallery. The workshops are all designed to emphasize the four tenets of the new state arts standards-create, connect, respond and present -- which promote rigorous, higher-order thinking in the classroom.

SUNY Potsdam's Department of Art offers both Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Fine Arts degree programs in art education, studio art, fine arts, and graphic design and new media. Graduates have gone on to pursue professions in the fine arts, art administration, art therapy, digital design, K-12 and university teaching, museum curation, audio/visual administration, publishing, gallery ownership, interior design, architecture, commercial printing, pattern making, photojournalism, studio ceramics and more.
