SUNY Potsdam Students & Faculty Attend Mathematical Association of America Seaway Conference

SUNY Potsdam Mathematics Students & Faculty Participate in Mathematical Association of America Seaway Conference

Potsdam, NY (10/21/2025) — Nine students and five faculty members from SUNY Potsdam's Department of Mathematics recently took part in the fall Mathematical Association of America Seaway Section Fall Conference, held on Oct. 3 and 4 at St. Lawrence University.

Thanks to the proximity of the conference and generous support from the Gilchrist Endowment and the Lougheed Center for Applied Learning, a strong contingent of SUNY Potsdam students was able to attend and engage with peers and professionals from across the region.

"The atmosphere was welcoming. It was amazing to be surrounded by mathematicians, both local and from far away," said Julian Lacson '29. "My favorite large session of the meeting was Ranthony Clark's quantitative justice lecture. I appreciated the simplicity of her slideshow, and her active engagement with the audience. As a student, I enjoyed hearing about the numerous opportunities that stemmed from her work with mathematics, and how she applied what she has learned to other fields of work."

The event brought together 134 participants from institutions spanning Albany to Montreal. The conference featured keynote addresses, scholarly presentations, student poster sessions, and interactive activities. SUNY Potsdam Professor Dr. Blair Madore hosted a lively "Math Jeopardy!" competition, challenging students in a fun and engaging format.

The SUNY Potsdam student participants included:

  • George Clapper of Lake Hill, NY
  • Andrew Diponio of New Paltz, NY
  • Eric Gordonos of Westport, CT
  • Julian Lacson of Albany, NY
  • Isaac Morais of Araraquara, Brazil
  • Luke Phippen of Potsdam, NY
  • Lucas Salas of Hazlet, NJ
  • Karl Schreyer of Potsdam, NY
  • Addison VanTassel of Morristown, NY

They were accompanied by Madore, Dr. Harold Ellingsen, Dr. Joel Foisy, Dr. Jason Howald and Dr. Cheryl Miller. The faculty members were able to connect with a number of colleagues and alumni at the conference, in addition to participating in sessions.

The SUNY Potsdam Department of Mathematics offers both undergraduate and graduate programs, including the nationally recognized combined BA/MA program. The department is grounded in the belief that students can succeed if they are provided with a supportive environment with rich professional opportunities and encouraging faculty.
