SUNY Potsdam Announces Winners of 2019 Learning & Research Fair Awards

Students and Faculty Mentors Honored with Awards for Excellence Following SUNY Potsdam Learning & Research Fair 2019

Potsdam, NY (05/10/2019) — SUNY Potsdam recently recognized students and faculty mentors for excellence in research and creative projects, following the College's 2019 Learning and Research Fair.

The 2019 Learning and Research Fair at SUNY Potsdam was held on April 24 in the Barrington Student Union, and featured more than 60 student projects. Top research projects were recognized with awards, which included $2,800 worth of prizes, presented in a ceremony concluding the fair.

Frederick B. Kilmer Research Awards

  • Monica Mack, first place in the sciences category (tie), for "Large-scale Purification of a Protein Complex Involved in Protein Degradation from Yeast" (Faculty mentor: Dr. Fathima Nazeer, Department of Chemistry)
  • Alex Hofler, first place in the sciences category (tie), for "Effect of a Protein Degradation Factor Mutant on mRNA Processing Factors" (Faculty mentor: Dr. Fathima Nazeer, Department of Chemistry)
  • Nicholas Flint, third place in the sciences category, for "Probing the Interactions Between the Nuclear Receptor Coactivator-4 and Ferritin" (Faculty mentor: Dr. Fadi Bou-Abdallah, Department of Chemistry)
  • Zaine Roberts, first place in the humanities, arts and social sciences category, for "Spirituality and Coping with Distress in Indigenous Students" (Faculty mentor: Dr. Claire Starrs, Department of Psychology).

Ram L. Chugh North Country Research & Public Service Awards

  • Elizabeth Norkevich, first place, for "Profiling Human Skulls from a Taxidermy Shop in St. Lawrence County, New York" (Faculty mentor: Dr. Nasser Malit, Department of Anthropology).
  • Lauryn Czyzewski, second place (tie), for "Understanding the Champlain Canal in the Mid-to-Late 19th Century" (Faculty mentor: Dr. Hadley Kruczek-Aaron, Department of Anthropology).
  • Madison Cleveland, second place (tie), for "Wood Turtle (Glyptemys insculpta) Populations and Movement Patterns Within St. Lawrence County" (Faculty mentor: Dr. Glenn Johnson, Department of Biology).

Graduate Student Award

  • Lindsay Dingman, Ciera Jock, Brytney Laird and Allison McConlogue, for "Frankenreads: A Public Humanities Event Celebrating Mary Shelley's Frankenstein" (Faculty mentor: Dr. Lisa Wilson, Department of English and Communication).

Provost's Awards for Excellence in Student Research

  • Shannon Mattice, for "Maria van Rensselaer and the Power of Dutch Widowhood" (Faculty mentor: Dr. Sheila McIntyre, Department of History).
  • Othman Ladan, for "The Difference in Perception of Breast Cancer Among Muslims Women in Ghana" (Faculty mentor: Dr. Christopher Torres, Department of Public Health and Human Performance).

Outstanding Faculty Mentorship of Undergraduate Research Award

  • Dr. Fathima Nazeer, assistant professor of chemistry

The Learning and Research Fair is coordinated by the Office for Student Research and Creativity, which offers support for student-faculty collaborations or mentorships that contribute to the understanding of a discipline through the examination, study, creation and communication of new knowledge, by means of an original scholarly or creative project.

The Office for Student Research and Creativity also oversees the Presidential Scholars Program, the Kilmer Fund, the Institute for Ethical Behavior and the Honors Program. It is part of the Donald and Kathryn Lougheed Center for Applied Learning, located in the Lougheed Learning Commons.
