Met Opera Summer Encores Return with Potsdam Broadcasts on July 9
Spend 'Mondays at the Met' This Summer, with Encore Metropolitan Opera Broadcasts Sponsored by The Crane School of Music & JS Cinemas
Potsdam, NY (06/21/2018) — North Country audiences can enjoy encore broadcasts of Metropolitan Opera productions again this summer, bringing classic works to the silver screen.
The tenth summer season of The Met: Live in HD will feature rebroadcasts of four of the Met's most popular operas, in startling high definition.
All are invited to spend "Mondays at the Met" this July, with four screenings offered at Potsdam's Roxy Theater, all sponsored by SUNY Potsdam's Crane School of Music and J.S. Cinemas.
The Met Opera Summer Encores will be offered weekly on Monday evenings, from July 9 to July 30, with all broadcasts kicking off at 6:30 p.m. at Potsdam's Roxy Theater.
The 2018 Met Opera Summer Encores schedule is as follows:
- Giacomo Puccini's "Madama Butterfly": Monday, July 9 at 6:30 p.m.: Anthony Minghella's breathtaking production has thrilled audiences ever since its premiere in 2006. Soprano Kristine Opolais takes on the title role, and Roberto Alagna sings Pinkerton, the naval officer who breaks her heart. Karel Mark Chichon conducts.
- Giuseppe Verdi's "Il Trovatore": Monday, July 16 at 6:30 p.m.: Soprano Anna Netrebko's dramatic and vocal skills are on full display as Leonora, the Verdi heroine who sacrifices her life for the love of the title troubadour. Tenor Yonghoon Lee sings the ill-fated Manrico, baritone Dmitri Hvorostovsky is his rival, and mezzo-soprano Dolora Zajick is the mysterious gypsy with a troubled past. Marco Armiliato conducts Sir David McVicar's gritty, Goya-inspired production.
- Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's "Eugene Onegin": Monday, July 23 at 6:30 p.m.: Beloved American soprano and Crane School of Music alumna Renée Fleming '81 joins Russian baritone Dmitri Hvorostovsky for a performance of Tchaikovsky's masterpiece of unrequited young love. The opera's sweeping dramatic arc of this opera -- youthful longing, rejection, regret, a desperate plea that comes too late -- is perfectly mirrored in Tchaikovsky's achingly beautiful music and in the gorgeous lighting of this strikingly minimal production.
- Giacomo Puccini's "Turandot": Monday, July 30 at 6:30 p.m.: Nina Stemme, one of opera's greatest dramatic sopranos, takes on the title role of the proud princess of legendary China. Tenor Marco Berti is Calàf, the brave prince who sings "Nessun Dorma" and wins her hand. Franco Zeffirelli's dazzling production is conducted by Paolo Carignani.
Shortened intermission features will allow for the enjoyment of younger audiences, as well as busy schedules. English subtitles bring the stories to life. All are welcome to experience the depth and raw energy of world-class opera without going all the way to New York City!
