Crane School of Music Faculty Set to Present a Series of Chamber Recitals

SUNY Potsdam's Crane School of Music Features Faculty Artists in Three Upcoming Chamber Performances

Potsdam, NY (09/17/2019) — SUNY Potsdam's Crane School of Music will highlight its renowned faculty artists in three upcoming chamber performances.

Julia Trio

The Julia Trio will present a faculty string chamber recital on Sunday, Sept. 29 at 3 p.m., in the Sara M. Snell Music Theater. The Julia Trio includes Liesl Schoenberger Doty (violin), Shelly Tramposh (viola) and Marie-Élaine Gagnon (cello). Their performance will include the "String Trio" by Jennifer Higdon and the "String Trio in C-Minor, Op. 9, No. 3" by Ludwig van Beethoven. The trio will be joined by Crane School of Music students Olivia Coyne, Laura Matthews and Samantha Bacher for the Tchaikovsky sextet, "Souvenir of Florence, Op. 70," to close the concert.

Two Sextets, One Performance

Crane School of Music faculty members will perform two major sextets for winds and piano on Wednesday, Oct. 2 at 7:30 p.m., also in Snell Theater. This chamber performance will feature Francis Poulenc's sextet from the 1930s, and Ludwig Thuille's sextet dating to the late 19th century. These works are rare examples combining the wind quintet with piano, and represent two of the leading pieces composed for this combination of instruments. The faculty performers include Dean Michael Sitton (piano), Anna Hendrickson (oboe), Jill Rubio (flute), Julianne Kirk Doyle (clarinet), Carol Lowe (bassoon) and Lauren Becker (horn).

An Evening of Schubert

The faculty performances will continue with an evening of chamber works by Franz Schubert, on Thursday, Oct. 3 at 7:30 p.m., in Snell Theater. The concert will feature Schubert's set of variations for piano and flute, based on "Trockne Blumen (Withered Flowers)," the 18th song from his song cycle "Die Schöne Müllerin (The Pretty Miller Girl)." Unlike the sad ending of the original song, this set of variations concludes the miller's journey with triumph and heroism. The recital also includes Schubert's "Sonata for Piano and Violin in A-Major," also known as the "Grand Duo." The performers include Yoojung Kim (piano), Liesl Schoenberger Doty (violin), Donald George (tenor) and Jill Rubio (flute).

All of these concerts are free, and the public is invited to attend.

All of the performances will be broadcast live on the Crane School of Music YouTube channel at the concert time. To view the programs and see other upcoming streaming performances, visit http://www.potsdam.edu/academics/Crane/streaming.
