Crane School Bands Program Goes Virtual For Fall 2020

Online Format Offered in Popular Crane School of Music Learning Program for Young Musicians

by Bret Yager

Potsdam, NY (08/07/2020) — SUNY Potsdam's Crane School of Music has been offering enriching educational programs to aspiring young musicians for decades. In a year like no other, the School is taking steps to make sure the learning continues -- most recently with plans for a virtual Crane School Bands Program for children ages 9 to 15, starting the week of Sept. 16.

Space is limited to 36 slots for this popular free instruction program on woodwind, brass and percussion instruments designed for beginning instrumental music students. Crane's undergraduate music students will give weekly lessons in flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone and percussion, with the lessons running through the end of the fall semester.

The lessons and musical styles are meant to offer engaging avenues to each instrument for children ages 9 to 15 at the beginning musical levels. Public school and homeschooled children alike are encouraged to participate. Instruction will be offered online only, through Zoom. Students will need a working laptop, webcam with microphone, and internet access.

"It is my hope that students will be able to gain meaningful enrichment through music and sustain their development, even though schools may be meeting virtually or using different models throughout the country," said Dr. William Lake, an assistant professor of music education at Crane. "For Crane students, this unique teaching paradigm allows for unique adaptations of pedagogy through virtual learning and the opportunity to engage with students from diverse populations."
