Crane Concert Band Presents Performance Full of Musical 'Mutations' on Nov. 14
SUNY Potsdam's Crane School of Music Hosts Crane Concert Band Performance on Nov. 14
Potsdam, NY (10/23/2018) — SUNY Potsdam's Crane School of Music will present an evening of musical "mutations" in an upcoming performance by the Crane Concert Band, on Wednesday, Nov. 14 at 7:30 p.m., in the Helen M. Concert Hosmer Hall.
In this program of "Mutations," the Crane Concert Band will explore the ways in which composers use extant material and process it through their own aesthetic styles. In "Kirkpatrick Fanfare" by Andrew Boysen, the well-known Irish melody "O, Danny Boy" is broken into pieces and deployed as a fanfare jig, introduced by a tin whistle. Jennifer Higdon's 2002 choral setting of the celebrated sacred text "O Magnum Mysterium" has been rescored for winds and will feature two flute players from the ensemble.
Norman Dello Joio's "Fantasies on a Theme by Haydn" pays homage to the "father of the symphony," a figure in musical heritage that Dello Joio felt will always remain contemporary. Johann Sebastian Bach was a master of harmonic variation in his settings of Lutheran chorales. The Concert Band will perform "Fervent is My Longing," followed by the "Little Fugue in G-Minor." The program will conclude with David Maslanka's "Give Us This Day," a two-part symphonic work that incorporates Bach's "Our Father in Heaven."
This concert is free, and the public is invited to attend.

The Crane Concert Band is a 79-member wind and percussion ensemble at The Crane School of Music, conducted by Visiting Assistant Professor Dr. Joshua Roach. The ensemble performs a breadth of repertoire from traditional and contemporary composers.
