Shianne Washington of the Bronx, N.Y. Honored with Success Through Achievement & Commitment Award from SUNY Potsdam

Two SUNY Potsdam students were recently recognized with the 2013 Success through Achievement and Commitment Awards, by the College's Student Success Center.

Tamara Durant, director of the Student Success Center, presented the awards, which were established to provide financial support to encourage the recipients' persistence and continuing success. SSC staff members and other College faculty and staff made the $500 awards possible through their donations.

The award recipients included Shianne Washington of the Bronx, N.Y..

Donald Patrick Leisure, a freshman whose major is geology, was selected to receive this award based upon his outstanding academic achievement in the Fall 2012 semester, his participation in Student Support Services and the Non-Traditional Student Organization. He was also honored for the initiative he displayed in arranging a six-credit academic summer internship at the Independence Mine State Historical Park in Alaska, working with the College's Experiential Education Office and the Department of Geology.

Shianne Washington, a sophomore whose major is childhood/early childhood education, received the award because of her academic achievement, her leadership and involvement in the Educational Opportunity Program and with Student Support Services as a mentor and tutor, as well as her participation in the Teacher Opportunity Corps program. Washington also serves on the Multicultural Weekend Committee and the College's Student Advisory Board.
