SUNY Potsdam Student Bailey Weigel Honored with 2015 Chancellor's Award

2015 May 11

Bailey Weigel was among three outstanding SUNY Potsdam students who were recently honored with the 2015 Chancellor's Award for Student Excellence. Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher presented the awards to students from across the SUNY system in a ceremony held in Albany.

The SUNY Potsdam recipients included Gregory Shilling, Brady Turner and Bailey Weigel.

Gregory Shilling is a senior music education major from New Windsor, N.Y. A singer-songwriter, he wrote, produced and performed original music to raise awareness and funds for various charities through his Keep Livin' Project, named after a song he wrote for his sister. In addition, to date, he has raised more than $4,000 for the Synovial Sarcoma Research Fund. Shilling also created a new "Mr. and Ms. Universe-ity" contest, which raised more than $1,700 for SUNY Potsdam's Greatest Needs Fund.

Brady Turner is a senior speech communications and history major from Potsdam, N.Y. A dedicated admissions ambassador for SUNY Potsdam, he has led more than 50 tours of campus and helped to serve as the "face" of the college for prospective students. He has also served as the food and hospitality chair for Relay for Life, and was integral to that event's success in raising more than $62,000 in the fight against cancer. Brady also assisted the student conduct office as an intern, where he examined the trends of alcohol violations over a three-year period for the college.

Bailey Wygel is a senior business administration major from East Amherst, N.Y. She is a recipient of the Mount Emmons Scholarship, the highest honor that an incoming student can receive at SUNY Potsdam. As a starting athlete on two variety sports teams, Bailey is the captain of the Bears Women's Basketball Team and is a member of the Women's Lacrosse Team, where she was an All-Conference Selection. In recognition of her academic and athletic achievements, she was honored with the SUNYAC Chancellor Scholar Athlete Award.

The Chancellor's Award for Student Excellence was created in 1997 to honor students who excel academically and show involvement in leadership roles, athletics, community service, creative and performing arts, campus involvement, or career achievement.

Each year, campus presidents establish a selection committee, which reviews exemplary students. Nominees are then forwarded to the Chancellor's Office and are subject to a second round of review. Finalists are then recommended to the Chancellor to become recipients of the award. Each recipient receives a framed certificate and medallion, which is traditionally worn at Commencement.
