Rochester Native Brianne Borden Performs in Concert Series at Troy Savings Bank Music Hall

2010 Oct 5

Rochester, N.Y. native Brianne Borden, a sophomore at the State University of New York at Potsdam's Crane School of Music, is set to perform in an upcoming outreach concert. Two of Crane's most elite performing ensembles will present an outreach concert in Troy, N.Y. next week.

Gifted pianists will present works from the 2010 Frédéric Chopin Bicentennial Project and the members of the Frackenpohl Honors Brass Quintet will perform. The talented Crane School of Music students will play in the inaugural concert of the 2010-11 Tuesdays at Noon Concert Series at noon on Tuesday, Oct. 12 at the Troy Savings Bank Music Hall in Troy, N.Y.

The Troy Savings Bank Music Hall is a world-class performing venue known for its exceptional acoustics. Since 1988, on the second Tuesday of each month, the hall has hosted exceptional regional musicians with a diverse mix of musical styles through the Music at Noon Concert Series. Guests are encouraged to bring their lunch to the performance. This event is free, and the public is invited to attend.

Student pianists Sean Carmichael and Dai Yi will kick off the concert with performances of works by Chopin, whose 200th birthday is being celebrated throughout 2010.

A native of Liberty, N.Y., Carmichael is a graduate student at SUNY Potsdam's Crane School of Music, where he studies piano performance under the direction of Paul Wyse. A winner of the Crane Concerto Competition, he performed Rachmaninoff's first concerto with the Crane Symphony Orchestra in 2007. Carmichael has also performed solo recitals at the Old Forge Arts Center and the Shandalee Music Festival, and has worked as a collaborative pianist with the Crane Opera Ensemble since 2006, having the opportunity to perform with such artists as Christine Brewer and Sylvia and David Aronson of the Vienna State Opera. He is the recipient of numerous awards and scholarships. Currently, Carmichael is employed as an accompanying assistant at Crane, and has participated in masterclasses with Marc Durand, David Rodriguez, Yelena Ivonov and Mikola Suk.

Dai Yi is a native of Shanghai, China, and is the recipient of numerous music prizes, including first place in the Empire States Competition, the Brakey Scholarship and the 2009 Henry Kashiwa Award from the Old Forge Arts Center. She has performed in major venues such as the Shanghai Symphony Hall, and appeared in a nationally-broadcast public television documentary featuring the 2009 Julia Crane International Piano Competition. Yi is a senior piano performance major at the Crane School of Music at SUNY Potsdam, where she also studies with Wyse.

The outreach concert will continue with several pieces performed by the members of the Frackenpohl Honors Brass Quintet, consisting of two trumpets, French horn, trombone and tuba.

The students will perform "Hornpipe" from Water Music by George Frideric Handel, as well as Victor Ewald's "Brass Quintet No. 1, Op. 5" in three movements from 1902. The concert will conclude with Tom Turpin's rollicking "Harlem Rag."

The Frackenpohl Honors Brass Quintet is an elite ensemble of students from the Crane School of Music. Auditioned each year, the ensemble is endowed by Professor Emeritus Dr. Arthur Frackenpohl, an internationally-known composer and arranger. Each student receives scholarship support and funding for travel and other musical activities.

The members of the quintet include:

  • Brian Masterson, a senior performance major from Hicksville, N.Y., on trumpet.
  • Brianne Borden, a sophomore music education and performance double-major from Rochester, N.Y., on trumpet.
