SUNY Potsdam Now Accepting Applications for Walker Fellowship

North Country Research Projects Supported Through the Walker Fellowship Program

Potsdam, NY (01/17/2023) — The Office of the Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs at SUNY Potsdam is pleased to announce the continuation of the T. Urling and Mabel Walker Research Fellowship Program for 2023.

The purpose of this program is to encourage faculty from the region's 11 institutions of higher education to undertake research on critical issues confronting North Country communities, and to make recommendations for possible solutions.

"Following the recent passing of T. Urling Walker, who with his late wife Mabel established their namesake Walker Research Fellowship Program, it is an honor to once again invite new proposals for the next round of funding. The Walkers' legacy will continue to live on through the couple's support of scholarship and research focused on the North Country, and we are proud to play a part in those efforts," said SUNY Potsdam Interim Provost Dr. Alan Hersker.

The 11 institutions include Adirondack Community College, Clarkson University, Clinton Community College, Jefferson Community College, SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry, North Country Community College, Paul Smith's College, St. Lawrence University, SUNY Canton, SUNY Plattsburgh and SUNY Potsdam. Full- or part-time teaching and non-teaching faculty from the 11 colleges are eligible to apply.

The program is designed to promote greater community-academic cooperation. Proposals that include a strong statement of support from a local individual or organization that clearly explains how the community will benefit from the project results will be given preference.

Funding for this program comes from the Campaign for the T. Urling and Mabel Walker Research Fellowship Program, which is administered by the SUNY Potsdam Provost's Office.

A maximum of two research projects of up to $5,000 can be awarded each year. The Walker Fellowship Steering Committee will determine the amount of the award for each approved project.

In the past, funds have been used to pay a student assistant, support travel costs and purchase software and supplies. Only in limited cases have funds been used as a stipend for the researcher.

Proposals are due by March 1, close of business.
