SUNY Potsdam Disciplined Inquiry in Education Seminar Series Continues in 2023

2023 Disciplined Inquiry in Education Seminar Series Kicks Off Again on Feb. 8 at SUNY Potsdam, with Wide-Ranging Array of Talks Planned

Potsdam, NY (01/24/2023) — SUNY Potsdam will continue its Disciplined Inquiry in Education Seminar Series with a range of topics across the disciplines in 2023, and is open to the public once again this semester.

Sponsored by SUNY Potsdam's School of Education and Professional Studies, the annual series is celebrating 16 years and more than 150 presentations to date. All seminar meetings will be face-to-face with an online attendance option.

Victoria Hayes, a clinical faculty member in the Department of Elementary Education, will open the series this semester with an overview of her quest to "intentionally invite" students from marginalized backgrounds to engage in the college classroom. Her talk is titled "'You don't spell it you feel it.' -Winnie-the-Pooh," after Pooh's response to a query about how to spell the word "love," in A.A. Milne's famous books.

All seminar meetings will be offered on Wednesdays, in the Rebecca V. Sheard Literacy Center balcony, from noon to 1 p.m. (unless otherwise noted). There will also be a virtual viewing option available via Zoom.

The sessions for the series are as follows:

  • Feb. 8: "'You don't spell it you feel it.' -Winnie-the-Pooh," presented by Victoria Hayes (Elementary Education)
  • Feb. 22: "Academic Libraries: Spaces of Connection," presented by Jennifer Jeffery, Edward Komara and Tamara Mason (College Libraries)
  • March 22: "Personal Data-Driven Decisions and the Science Behind Them," presented by Donald Straight (Department of Secondary Education) and Tanya Hewitt (Department of Public Health and Human Performance)
  • April 12: "Engaging Pre- and In-Service Teachers in Applied Learning Research Projects," presented by Mei Shen (Department of Advanced Studies in Education)
  • April 26: "Student Experience on a Backpacking Trip," presented by Samuel Santich (Department of Public Health and Human Performance)

These events are free, and the public is welcome to attend. Community members who wish to join either virtually or in person should email Billijean Elliott for more information, at plantybj@potsdam.edu.
