PLACE (Public Learning, Arts and Community Engagement) Presents 'A Natural History of Rum: Tasting & Talk' at SUNY Potsdam, Led by Dr. Susan Perkins '93

Potsdam, NY (07/24/2026) — SUNY Potsdam's PLACE (Public Learning, Arts and Community Engagement) invites campus and community members ages 21 and older to discover the story of rum -- and how it mirrors the history of the Caribbean and America -- in a unique upcoming event.

"A Natural History of Rum: Tasting and Talk" will be held on Thursday, Aug. 20, from 4:30 to 6 p.m., in the Raymond Hall eighth floor lounge and balcony.

Led by Dr. Susan Perkins '93, provost of SUNY Potsdam and former curator of microbiology at the American Museum of Natural History, the event will combine history, storytelling, guided rum tastings, and thoughtfully paired light fare for an unforgettable evening.

Guests will enjoy guided tastings of several distinctive rums, accompanied by expert insights and paired with light fare prepared by Chef Joel Brown, all set against panoramic views of the SUNY Potsdam campus and the distant Adirondack Mountains.

Perkins' research has taken her across the Caribbean, where she developed a deep appreciation for the region's history, culture, and traditions. In 2020, she co-authored a book chapter on rum in "Distilled: A Natural History of Spirits," blending her academic interests with a love of tropical cocktails. During this entertaining and informative presentation, she will explore rum's origins, its influence on the colonial Americas, its colorful rebirth in mid-century tiki culture, and the remarkable range of rums being crafted today.

Whether you're a history enthusiast, a curious spirits lover, or simply looking for a memorable evening out, attendees will enjoy guided tastings, delicious food, engaging conversation, and the fascinating story of rum in one of the most beautiful settings on campus.

Originally from Massena, N.Y., Dr. Susan Perkins '93 earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in biology from SUNY Potsdam before receiving her Ph.D. from the University of Vermont. She served as curator of microbiology at the American Museum of Natural History for 15 years, before transitioning to higher education leadership. Prior to returning to her alma mater as provost and senior vice president for academic affairs in 2025, she served as dean of science at The City College of New York (CUNY). Perkins is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the author of a popular book on the human microbiome.
