Northern Symphonic Winds Go 'There & Back Again' in Concert at The Crane School of Music

SUNY Potsdam's Crane School of Music Presents the Northern Symphonic Winds in Concert on Feb. 15

by Bret Yager

Potsdam, NY (02/06/2020) — SUNY Potsdam's Crane School of Music and the Northern Symphonic Winds invite the public to enjoy a concert titled "There and Back Again," on Saturday, Feb. 15 at 7:30 p.m., in the Helen M. Hosmer Concert Hall. The performance will be conducted by Dr. Brian K. Doyle and Dr. William L. Lake Jr.

Before the invention of the internet and modern-day travel, cultures that had once been separated by major oceans and natural borders became "neighbors," as musical exchanges allowed performers and audiences to transport themselves to places near and far. The Northern Symphonic Winds concert, "There and Back Again," will present the wind music of American and international composers, by juxtaposing their unique artistic voices.

The concert program includes Roshanne Etezady's "Shoutout," Aram Khachaturian's "Armenian Dances," Aaron Copland's "Emblems," Jindrich Feld's "Divertimento," Julie Giroux's "Riften Wed," Percy Grainger's "Lincolnshire Posy," and a transcription of Camille Saint-Saëns' "Pas Redoublé" by the late Crane Professor Emeritus Arthur Frackenpohl.

Admission to the concert is $10 for adults, $5 for senior citizens and free for SUNY Potsdam students - no passports needed.

Founded in 1998, the Northern Symphonic Winds is a 55-piece wind and percussion ensemble comprised of Crane School of Music faculty, Northern New York music educators and other professionals, as well as select Crane students.
