Crane School of Music Opens Yearlong Celebration of Women in Music

SUNY Potsdam's Crane School of Music Welcomes Visiting Scholar & Alumni Educators to Examine 'Gender & Equity in Music Education'

Potsdam, NY (08/19/2019) — SUNY Potsdam's Crane School of Music will mark the 100th anniversary of women's suffrage in the United States with a series of events celebrating women's contributions to music over the coming academic year.

To begin the commemoration, Crane will host a three-day event focused on "Gender and Equity in Music Education" next week, from Aug. 27 to 29. The series will focus on a critical examination of ideology and the music curriculum, with a visiting master teacher and several guest alumni music educators.

Dr. Julia Eklund Koza, a professor of music education at the University of Wisconsin at Madison, will present a keynote address, titled "The Charm of an Educated Woman: Thinking Intersectionally about Sexism and the Racial Contract," on Tuesday, Aug. 27 at 7:30 p.m., in the Sara M. Snell Music Theater. The keynote is free, and the public is invited to attend.

Koza is widely regarded as one of the preeminent scholars and pioneering researchers in music focused on equity education. She is a long-time advocate of diversity, equity and inclusion, with a special interest in women's studies.

Six Crane School of Music alumni and practicing K-12 public school music teachers who represent different parts of New York State and different areas of expertise will also visit campus. Along with Koza, they will lead open forums and visit classes over the course of three days.

These young professionals represent the very best of a new generation of leaders dedicated to challenging the deep-seated status quo of how music education "should be done." The practicing teachers will discuss how they challenge the hegemonies that work against equity, access and inclusion in the K-12 music education curriculum.

The visiting alumni include:

  • John Bernstein '13, Monticello School District
  • Genevieve Brigida '13 & '16, Bronx, New York City Department of Education
  • Benjamin Rybolt '13 & '15, Rochester City School District
  • Kathryn Ta '13 & '16, West Genesee Central School
  • Kevin Tims '99, Brentwood Union Free School District
  • Marichelle Weill '12 & '16, East Rockaway School District

Koza's visit to Potsdam is made possible through the Joy Anthony Douglass Visiting Master Teacher Fund, which was established by Joy Anthony Douglass '56 to honor the transformative experiences she had as a student during her time at Crane. The fund enables visiting master teachers to share their insights and expertise with Crane School of Music students and faculty, as well as music educators from throughout the region.
